Muslim girl secures high rank at civil services exams

Shammi Abidi has secured 16th position on all India basis in the UPSC-2006 (IAS as a layman like me knows it :) ). Here is the interview she gave to Twocircles.net. The exams is one of the toughest in the country. The interview is in English

Some points to be noted about the interview-

1. She rose to this level because her family wanted her to. I have seen many Muslim students drop out because parents refuse to pay the high cost of higher education. If parents are graduates then it does help a lot. Shammi’s father is a lecturer and her other siblings are too highly placed.

2. Her parent’s main concern is about marriage, it’s difficult to get a suitable match. This is sadly the state of affairs among Muslims. Muslim men lag behind women in terms to education and plus the male ego prevents them from marrying someone of a higher stature.
