Helping Pakistan

Candle Vigil

Students observe candle vigil. Via FAST.

Emergency Times is an ambitious blog by some ambitious students from the LUMS, nicknamed Pakistan’s Harvard.

In a revealing post,

“Understand this is still very much a monarchical society in which the ruler, in whatever garb, believes he rules by divine right Understand the culture in which every ruler, legitimate or illegitimate, begins to see visions of being anointed by the Almighty to “save the nation.””

  1. One question. Why do we see this manifesto now?

  2. This is not a manifesto, gess. This is a ‘rant’.

  3. Ok, Manas. Why then the “rant” now?

Why not before the crisis began or before Musharraf came to power?

It doesn’t take a genius to figure out why the crooked Princess Ferragamo–Benazir Bhutto—has returned to Pakistan. Bhutto’s been traipsing all over Washington trying to garner support from think-tank heavies and establishment powerbrokers to help her stage a political come-back in Islamabad. She even hired a high-powered public relations firm to polish her image so the media wouldn’t focus too much attention on her past transgressions. Allegations of money laundering and corruption have haunted Bhutto ever since she was driven from office in 1996. Last month, General Musharraf cut a deal with Bhutto which freed her from the prospect of criminal prosecution and allowed her to return home. The arrangement ignored the judicial system entirely. The $1.5 billion that she and her husband allegedly “received in a variety of criminal enterprises” has simply disappeared down the memory hole.

Another tidbit the media seems to breezily disregard is Bhutto’s role in supporting Islamic extremism; the very dragon she is now expected to slay. According to Wikipedia: “It was during Bhutto’s rule that the Taliban took power in Kabul and gained prominence in Afghanistan. She viewed the Taliban as a group that could stabilize Afghanistan and enable trade across the Central Asia republics. Her government provided military and financial support for the Taliban, even sending a small unit of the Pakistani army into Afghanistan.”

US historian, Arthur Herman, in a letter published in the Wall Street Journal, described Bhutto as “One of the most incompetent leaders in the history of South Asia;” adding that she and other Pakistani elites hated Musarraf because he is “muhajir”, born of Indian Muslims. Herman claims, “Although it was muhajirs who agitated for the creation of Pakistan in the first place, many native Pakistanis view them with contempt and treat them as third-class citizens.”

  4. Pakisatn is an independent country and not a small child of months-now she is 60 years old.No one has to worry anout Pakistan especially the lovers of thsi country who mostly idealized the western culture andfled to distant lands on the pretext of earning good life and status or education. If they were brave enough they could have stayed here to chnge the country to a better side. When they left this country most of them echoed that this country is useless,no regard fortalent, merit eyc. Some of the people going out became other than Muslims others married to get nationality. We dont doubt about their sincerity but if could have lived here the they would have knew what the so caalled democracy have given the PAkistanis-loot,fraud,caste-ism,liars andwhat more. The western democracy centres upon the philosophy to give a chance to ecery body eho is eitther sinful or is pious.Islam defines ademocracy as teh system which elects pious people by the pious people. The western philosophy and ethics have destroyed the individual identity of uslim countries. We should look towards our problems and ethics and not the west. Why to worry about the west who was never yr friend.Pakistan is the blessing of Allah and his Prophet(peace of Allah on him).No one can harm Pakistan. That is sure.so please dont worry. Please look towards yr history-strating from the Holy Prophet(peace of Allah on him) till all great rulers-they were all warrriors-general,fighters and not modern democrats. It is in our tardition and blood to have a gebneral as head. Can y deny yr history!

  5. But sister, better late than never. At least they are protesting now.

Jalees, thank you for your opinion.

  6. The term ” Muhajir” is itself the base root of
discord (fitnah) which is relentlessly used
by many with hidden intentions, even Pakistanis
are victim of this ‘propaganda’, just imagine
Pakistan was demanded by the muslims of British
India i.e. from the British colonials not from
the Hindus of British India ! and a muslim from
Lukhnow, Delhi, Bengal, Sindh, Baluchistan or
even Pashtoon & Punjab has no monopoly on the
creation of Pakistan, NEVER IN THE HISTORY was
a collective efforts so successful after the
famous victorious and glorious entry into
Mecca by Prphet Muhammed SAW, why should we
believe in this vicious theory of ‘exclusivity’related to an thnie or region
Was Pakistan pensable without Bengal muslims ?

  7. @ Now that Bhutto does’nt exist anymore,
perhaps the US Historian might change his
theory as usual, its strange, he has bizarre
    revelations about Pakistan movement.
” Muhajjir’s agitation created Pakistan ” atleast this is understood by such colonial
grammar of a historian, imagine, Pakistan only
    limited to Luckhnow and Dehli.
I wonder why a US Historian does’nt give his
opinion on her Husband Zardari ??
