Hello, I am a 36-year-old Mormon man from the US who has been interested in Islamic History since I visited Istanbul when I was 23 and took a class on Muhammad that same year. I have read many parts of the Koran and continue to be fascinated by the history, culture and spiritual wealth of Islam. I am wondering if someone like me would be able to a) go on a hajj and b) visit Hira Cave and other sites near Medina and Mecca? Thanks.

AA- Hasan,

I pray you have an enjoyable trip to the Haramain. My only suggestion would be to go on a sightseeing tour in Madina. Nor sure if you went on the 'ziyara' (sightseeing in arabic), but in Madina they'll take you around to the all the historic sites and masjids. Its a must-see for anyone coming to Madina.

Overall, there are so many historic places in both holy cities, but sadly the Saudi officials have ruined them. Places like Khadijah's (ra) gravesite is tucked away where no one really knows about it. There's a special well in Mecca (in which the Prophet spit, I think..not sure of the entire story), but its located in some dark alley or something. It may even have been destroyed with a new hotel built over it.

Anyways, may Allah grant you a special trip full of spiritual discoveries that no government can ever destroy. :-)

Assalamu Alikum,

I enjoyed your story and related pictures regarding you climb to cave of Hira. In sha Allah I will be making Umrah next week and was wondering if there were any other little interesting things you recommend while you are in Mecca or Medina. I have made Hajj before, but it is too crowded and busy for any extra activities. Last year I went for Umrah at abouth this time also and it is much more peaceful and relaxed.

Assalamu Alikum,
