The Rope of Allah

And hold fast, all of you together to the Rope of Allah, and be not divided among yourselves (3:103)

Umm Umar writes about what the Rope of Allah means to her in a moving poem.

The rope of Allah is anything we need it to be

To pull us safely back on His Path and away from His Wrath

The rope of Allah is dua, a step in the right direction, Money or time well spent The rope of Allah is a kind deed, a good word,

A ghusl taken for salat or a single day’s fast

The rope of Allah is in choosing not to go out, go away…

A Poem by Borderline Majnun:

Your glazed eyes caught mine
Standing in the cubicle not making a call -
All calls on wait cause the devil calling you
Chasing Glaurung with lips wrapped around a clear biro
Foil glistens in the Maghrib setting sun
Your glazed eyes caught mine
Movie poster barely covers shame
Should I have looked away?

Poem: Wedding Night of a Muslim Woman

Fatima Barkatulla asks: “What did your wedding night mean to you?”

I wrote this a few days ago and tried to capture the feelings I had after my wedding, that evening when for the first time I prayed with my husband, and spent my first hours with him.”

My secret locked, a tale untold,
The only key, within your hand,
Too sacred for them to behold,
Too pure for them to understand.

Call for Essays: Islam On My Side

Shawna at Islam on my Side wishes to compile a collection of essays by American Muslims about their post 9/11 experiences.
Book Stack

Islam on My Side will be an anthology of the individual voices of Muslims Americans living their lives post-9/ll. The collection will be works of creative nonfiction that address the following themes: How has life changed for you post-9/11? More specifically, how did the events of 9/11 impact the way you present yourself as a Muslim? Has your view of yourself or of other Muslims changed? Do you believe the way your friends, family or peers view you has changed? Has your view of yourself as a Muslim been altered?

A Lesson in Life

Love is an action of the heart.

The actions carried out by the limbs,

Can be somewhat limited in their expression,

Of the love a person’s heart really feels.

One can easily devote his/her heart

To another creature on the Earth,

But has one ever stopped to wonder…

What good does it bring about?

(Warning, this piece is about love)

Masha’Allah, I love the way this sister writes:

“When I was a girl, all I could think of was my family,” she said. “Even before I knew them, I loved them. I loved my husband before we ever met. I loved my sons and my daughters before they were born. When I thought of my future, I could only dream of them. I felt them coming to me long before they arrived.” She extracted two thin packets of gum from her purse. Opening one, she unwrapped and passed a piece to me. The other she lay to rest atop of the hand wipes. A present.
