The Haredim

Khairun Nisa of the Wisdom of the Muslim World blog relates the story of the Jewish Haredim, a very orthodox group within the Jewish faith. An interesting look at a community that is really not that different from our own.

Mrs Greenwald, 34, lives in Har Nof, an ultra-orthodox neighbourhood of Jerusalem where absolutely everything is closed on Saturday – the Sabbath – and only kosher food is sold in shops

Like all Haredi women, she dresses very modestly, covers her hair with a wig or scarf and will not allow physical contact of any kind with any man other than her husband.

Beautiful New Muslim Story

The SunniPath blog narrates the inspirational story of a new Muslim, and her journey to Islam. I found this story interesting as the sister enrolled in SunniPath courses before becoming a Muslim, and before even knowing any Muslims personally. It just goes to show that Allah can guide a person whosoever He wills, howsoever He wills.

God has always been with me. I grew up in a Christian home where I spent countless hours in Sunday school classes and church services listening to accounts that honestly made no sense. How could God be Jesus’ father? How can God be included in a Trinity? (There is only one god!). Why were there so many different versions of events (ie: Jesus’ birth) in the different gospels of the New Testament?

Respect Isn’t Hard

Reading the recent news of a British woman arrested in UAE, Bassam is reminded of a stand-up comedy show he recently saw on TV, and the culturally ignorant vitriol that followed. respecting other cultures, he argues, really isn’t that hard.

Respecting cultures comes from people’s education. Before I came to the U.S. I learned as much information as I could about the American culture and how to respect people’s traditions. If I hadn’t done that, I could have easily disrespected people here and be condemned and spelled out of the society.

The Art of Integration, by Peter Sanders

Adnan alerts us of the upcoming book entitled “The Art of Integration” by Peter Sanders, who many of you may recall as one of the judges for our recent photo competition.

The Art of Integration is a graceful and visually poetic reminder that Muslims have been a part of British life for well over a century and have made and continue to make an important contribution to the United Kingdom’s rich cultural diversity. Contrary to the headlines and editorializing, the vast majority of Muslims live peacefully and productively in Britain and many have significantly enriched the intellectual and cultural landscape of this great island nation.

The Art of the Ninjabi

Hey everyone,

I’m here to update you on the world of arts.

Too be honest…I didn’t have anything planned for this week as I just finished creating an album for ‘The Brothahood’.

Anyways, as for this week’s feature…erm…I wasn’t sure, but then I remembered Ninjabi.

I’m not ashamed to admit but I like to read graphic novels and comics. I love the artwork inside them plus some of the story plots can easily compete with awarding wining story books.

So it was interesting to find a comic strip that was made by Mediha Sandhu.

The comic is loosely based on the creators’ lives and deals with many current issues facing Muslim youth. The main character is Noor, a hijabi Muslim girl. Her best friends include non-muslims and non-hijabis.

Soooo…if you’re into that sort of thing then go check or do if you don’t!!! [erm…did that make sense?!]

Take That Thing Off Your Face!

Aalia chases Jannah while relating positive and negative anecdotes of wearing niqab in Western society.

…the face-veil (niqaab) is another story. Perhaps the reason why there are feelings of negativity and scary looks is because others feel threatened. But of what? A simple piece of fabric drawn across one’s face? Unfortunately, it symbolizes much more; fear, oppression, prejudice, stereotypes etc.
