Take That Thing Off Your Face!

Aalia chases Jannah while relating positive and negative anecdotes of wearing niqab in Western society.

…the face-veil (niqaab) is another story. Perhaps the reason why there are feelings of negativity and scary looks is because others feel threatened. But of what? A simple piece of fabric drawn across one’s face? Unfortunately, it symbolizes much more; fear, oppression, prejudice, stereotypes etc.

I Once Was Lost, but Now Am Found

…Was blind, but now I see, go the lyrics to Amazing Grace. Sister Amy, daughter of Guidance, finds a deeper meaning in the glasses that grace the face of her young nephew.

I was talking to one of my friends the other day about how life changes when someone becomes guided–that it is like they could sort of see the world, but it was blurry. This is a heart wrenching story narrated by Abu Qudama, a 10th century Muslim general from Iraq, about a young man called Muhammad who devoted his whole life to the cause of Islam – fulfilling his vow to his widowed mother to follow in his fathers footsteps and become a warrior, fighting for the sake of Allah to defend the weak.

This talk by Bilal Assad, extracted from the lecture ‘Those who desire Paradise’, takes us through the sequence of events in which Abu Qudama is introduced to this young man, and how his shining example of bravery and faith in Allah carried him through to his very last breath when he fell as a martyr.
