The Accident

A most moving account of an accident in school.

Abdul-Rahim’s heartbeat thumps against my body. It moves so quickly that I am afraid. I want to distract him, to amuse him. I switch to Urdu. There is very little that I can say in Urdu which is not related to food or classroom management. I wrack my brain. “Tum mere dost ho,” I sing to him. “Tum mere dost ho, billi k gosht ho.”

Teaching Children Aqeedah

Umm Maymoonah shares some wonderful advice on how to educate our children, about the nature of Allah:

The most effective method by which children acquire new skills and information is by exploring, seeing, touching and feeling. Therefore, it is not wise to tell a small child to sit down for an hour or two while you explain to them the different categories of Tawheed from a big text book. Forget children this method of learning sometimes puts adults off!!

A better approach would be to take them out to the zoo or park and inform them that Allah has created the animals and He is the creator of everything. Therefore, he is known as Al-Khaaliq. You could point to a tree and say “did you know that even when a leaf falls from that tree, Allah knows about it.”
We should make teaching fun so that they are learning about Allah as well as having fun. We should constantly mention the name of Allah so that the child grows up loving Allah (SWT).

At The Heart Of Every Relationship Is Allah

Anytime a relationship goes sour, one must stop first to ask what the basis of the relationship is and if in fact the relationship existed for the sake of Allaah Subhaanahu wa Ta`aala. A businessman who cheats others is wantonly defying the teachings of Islam. At the moment when he cheats another person, he is also allowing his personal greed to override his fear of Allaah Most High. A husband who raises his hands to hurt his wife or their children is defying the teachings of Islam. At the moment of his violent outburst, he is allowing his personal anger to override his fear of Allaah Most High. There can be no moment in which Allaah Most High is not at the heart of a relationship. It is an unfortunate existence, and indeed a miserable existence, for the one whose personal whims and desires end up placing him or her at the center of the relationship.
