Idolatory

I was actually going to link to Maryam’s latest entry, but then I saw this in the recent posts, which made me think “yeah!”*:

The final six male contestants for the popular prime time television show Australian Idol should alert us to the dangerous confusing our culture has plummeted into. This saddens me.

Is it not our job as residents of this Earth to inform, educate, enlighten and invigorate our fellow Homo sapiens with knowledge that is beneficial, in this life and the Hereafter?

*possibly one of the worst intros i’ve written on Ijtema, but who’s keeping track? :)

Progressive Islam

Lantern Torch present his views on “progressive” Islam:

The progressive movement is actually a movement to break away from their cultural shackles, not the shackles imposed upon them by Islam itself. As such, they should call themselves progressive Indians or progressive Arabs. The fact that they are Muslim has little to do with their cultural taboos or their rebellion against them.

Don’t Hate, Educate!

Zero-net.net is a unique cultural outreach initiative, that was set up in response to the infamous Danish cartoon saga. The website gives details of their various projects, including one called “Parallel Wisdom”, where well-known proverbs and quotes are compared side-by-side to the sage advice of the Qur’an and the sayings of the Prophet Muhammad, sallalahu ‘alayhi wa salam:

Curiosity killed the cat. (English Proverb)

Part of being a good Muslim, is leaving alone that which does not concern him. (Prophet Mohammad)

The Muslims Of China

Da discusses his recent trip to Eastern China, and his impressions of the indigenous Muslim population, known as the Hui:

I am pleased, firstly, with the way Hui seem secure in their Chinese cultural identity. There is little or no pressure to become a counterfeit Arab or Central Asian; matters like Tawhid (unity of god) and a more classical Muslim philosophy seemed to be stressed, not outward appearances.
