The Muslim Bashing Must End

This is the second offering in our newly introduced series of original content written by Ijtema editors. A warning to the readers: in keeping with the tendencies of the blogosphere, this entry is a rant in every sense of the word, and was written in the “heat of the moment” after witnessing some quite horrendous behaviour. So please excuse the emotional tone. I pray it’s a rant worth reading, though.

I’m getting pretty fed up with Muslim-on-Muslim bashing. No, i’m not referring to the Shia versus Sunni violence prevalent in Iraq, nor the Sufi versus Salafi rhetoric found on countless forums and blogs spread across the net. Rather, I am referring to this kind of talk:

“Oh, the Muslims are so stupid…”

“Oh, the Muslims are so lazy…”

“Oh, the Muslims are so backward…”

Blah! Blah! Blah!

All from the mouths of everyday Muslims.

Don’t you guys get it?

YOU’RE TALKING ABOUT YOURSELVES.

Dua For Everyone

Dua4me.com is a digg-like website, where people can come together to make dua for one another.

The site creator is looking for bloggers to test his ideas:

Alhamdulillah, The main idea I am currently proposing is a “Dua4Me” button that bloggers can put on their posts. This button looks similar to the Dua4Me vote box you see on the website.

I am looking for a few bloggers who are willing to test out this new feature. Insha Allah the bloggers who participate will get the reward of starting something new for the sake of Allah, any duas made from their site, they will insha Allah get rewarded for, and also because they will be the first to use it, insha Allah they will get the most publicity on Dua4Me.com effectively causing more people to benefit from their wonderful blog.

If you or anyone other bloggers you know would be willing to go forward with this endeavor, I can send you the simple set of instructions to get the duas going…

Jazak Allahu Khairan, May Allah reward you for the time spent in his cause.

If you’re interested, you can contact the brother on dua4me.com[at]gmail[dot]com

Our Tolerance Of Corruption

A very interesting entry by Brother Naeem, on how the sorry state of the Muslim World cannot be soley blamed on its leaders:

I start to realize that this bribery scandal is revealing on so many levels. Besides the obvious observation on the sad state of our leadership, it exposes a fundamental sickness plaguing the Muslim masses – we have become so accustomed to their corruption that we have ceased to hold them accountable, which in turn has lead to the ummah’s loss of self-accountability, on a collective as well as individual basis.

Jazakallah to Naeem for the tip.

IMASE 4th Research Colloquium

The International Muslim Association of Scientists and Engineers (IMASE) are holding their fourth research colloquium in London, on Saturday 23rd June 2007.

Are you a Muslim researcher?
Thinking about pursuing research?

Following the success of our previous colloquia the International Muslim Association of Scientists and Engineers invites you once again to join us for our Summer 2007 Colloquium this June.
The objective of the research colloquium is to reap the collective benefits of bringing together researchers within a Muslim environment. Muslim Society continues to undervalue study at the higher levels and the communication of research within its fold.
Whether you are an established academic, a PhD student or someone thinking of pursuing research, this is a chance for you to present your findings to other researchers within an Islamic environment. Your subject area could be in ANY discipline; Maths, Biology, History, Art, Tafsir or even Archaeology; we would like to hear from you.
If you would like to take part, have any questions about IMASE or how to pitch your presentation please e-mail us on info(at)imase(dot)org

For more details on time and location, please click here.

IMASE are also offering help to academic researchers in other parts of the world to set up their own colloquia.

If you haven’t already done so, please enter your details in their Global Expertise Database.

Labels: Help or Hinderence to Islamic Unity?

Anytime a discussion about Islam arises, I am always accused of somehow disuniting the Muslims because of my use of labels. “There are no Hanafis, Shafi’s, Asharis, etc., we’re all Muslims and these labels only hinder Islamic unity people constantly tell me. I reflected upon this for some time and I came to the conclusion that the contrary is true: labels help Islamic unity.

Loving Ummah

When one Muslim does an act of goodness, all our hands extend with his or hers. If one Muslim should fall, all of us stumble. If one suffers, we all feel pain. When one rejoices, we are all uplifted. In our oneness we will find our destiny and our destiny is to be one. For we are a single body, breathing with a single set of lungs, pulsating with a single heart, drawing from a single well of consciousness.

We are one Ummah. Let its guiding principle be love.

Nuh ibn Zbigniew Gondek writes about the importance of this brotherly feeling among Muslims.
